About Access Control Credentials

Credentials is a broad term. In access control, it applies to anything that people use to authenticate their identity when attempting to enter a restricted zone. There are three main categories of credentials:

  • Something you have, such as a swipe card or keyring fob.
  • Something you know, such as a password or PIN code.
  • Something you are, such as your fingerprint or iris patterns.

Our range of credentials includes many different shapes, sizes, types, and technologies. Different technologies offer different intrinsic levels of security. Factors such as encryption enhance the security of the data stored in the credential.

Choosing the ‘correct’ credential isn’t easy. It will be different for every project and every site. Installers and end users evaluate the site and its users to judge which credentials will work best in their circumstances. For most sites, choosing credentials is about finding an appropriate balance between security and convenience. When a system is highly secure, it is often also highly inconvenient and it may require a lot of an individual’s time to validate their identity and gain access. On the other hand, if a system is too easy to use, it might also be too easy to break.
