How radio transmission is used in access control
Radio transmission is what we call the unsung hero of access control. If you’ve ever had issues with cable access (like outdoor installations, listed buildings, glass walls), radio is probably the solution for you. It can replace the usual technologies for key fobs, remote controls, long-range access control, and more.
Installers tell us they’re using radio transmission as a simple and effective solution in situations such as automatic gates and barriers, industrial doors, and garages. It’s a simple setup: you first have a receiver wired into the component you want to activate. Then, somewhere else, you have a transmitter that will send a signal to the receiver to trigger the action. The transmitter could be a wireless push-button, a hand-held fob, or a trigger sensor.
Wireless technology provides a convenient solution in many instances where wired products would just be a pain. However, the nature of wireless solutions with signals flying through the air means they’re inherently more vulnerable than wired communication. It’s not black-and-white though; there are a range of techniques used to increase and improve the security of wireless products.
Limitations and considerations
KeeLoq rolling code and AES encryption are excellent upgrades to improve the security of a radio transmission solution. But remember that these are not the same as a complete system. If not implemented correctly, KeeLoq does have some known vulnerabilities. It’s essential not to cut corners or choose cheap imitation products.
Best practices for specifiers and installers
- Avoid fixed-code systems entirely
- Specify KeeLoq rolling code systems
- Choose encrypted systems where possible
- Work with reputable manufacturers with heritage in these products
- Consider risk factors for each environment
We recommend not choosing a fixed code system unless absolutely necessary. Rolling code receivers are no bigger, no different to setup, and usually only a small difference in price, but the security benefits are huge. KeeLoq® rolling code is the first step to a more secure solution. If there’s a little more room in the budget, choose a system that also adds AES encryption. And remember that although radio transmission is easy and effective, it’s not right for every site. You still need to consider the risk profile of each installation individually and adapt the solutions you select to the specific needs of the site.
And finally, while the low prices may be tempting, buying from cheap online marketplaces is a recipe for a security disaster. Stick to reputable manufacturers only with experience and heritage in radio solutions. Did we mention CDVI is one of them?!
How rolling code works
Real-world example: secure gate access
One of the common ways installers tell us they use our radio transmission solutions is with automated vehicle gates. These are becoming more common in residential settings, particularly where the property has a long driveway. It would be difficult and costly to lay cables all the way from the property to the gate, as well as adding a significant vulnerability to the system.
In this case, a wired receiver is fitted somewhere at the gate site in a discreet and secure position. Sometimes these are inside the gateposts, sometimes they’re in separate secure boxes – it depends on the site. The receiver is what triggers the gate to open once a valid signal is received, so it’s also connected to the automatic gate’s mechanism. Then each resident driver at the property keeps a hand-held transmitter fob inside their car. When they drive up, they press the button and the gate opens automatically ready for them to drive in. They might also have another trigger button inside the property to give visitors access.
